Announcing the John Williams Blogathon!

Tone Deaf the Brag

It goes without saying that John Williams is one of the most prestigious and influential composers in Hollywood history, and it also goes without saying that his scores are all memorable and unique in some way, maybe even singable. The Star Wars movies. Harry Potter. Indiana Jones. Superman. Valley of the Dolls. Catch Me If You Can. Hook. Schindler’s List. Minority Report. It goes on and on and on.

And who remembers Williams conducting the Boston Pops? My family and I used to watch Evening At Pops every Sunday night with a big bowl of popcorn and it was phenomenal. It wasn’t the same after Williams moved on.

Well, John Williams will be turning ninety on February eighth of 2022, and I thought it would be fun to celebrate this milestone with (what else?) a blogathon. Not to jinx anything, but I have a feeling this is going to be a big one because there are so many possibilities for topics.

Without further ado, here are…

The Rules

  1. Posts can be reviews of movies in Williams’s filmography (see a list here), his life, musicianship, his influence, his work outside of films, or anything relating to John Williams. Nothing derogatory, please, but honest opinions are fine. YouTubers and podcasters are welcome to contribute as well.
  2. This is a sizeable topic, so no duplicates will be allowed; however, more than one person can write about a certain film if it’s approached from different angles, such as a straight review vs. a listicle. There’s no limit on personal recollections, either.
  3. New material only, please.
  4. Posts can be sent to me on or around February fifth through the eighth, via the Comment section, my Contact page, my e-mail address (rebeccadeniston@gmail.com), Twitter (@TakingUpRoom), or tagging me on Instagram (@takinguproom).
  5. If possible, promote your posts on social media or on your blog (maybe both?) with the hashtags, #JohnWilliams or #HappyBirthdayJohnWilliams so that we have a chance of getting some well wishes to our guest of honor (Not many ninety-somethings are on social media, of course. Well, except for William Shatner. Who knows, someone relevant may notice.).
  6. If you don’t have blog, no problem! Guest posts and podcasts are also cool.
  7. Grab a banner and advertise the blogathon!

  1. A) Pretty sure I’m the “approached from different angles” guy….unless there’s another “sports Analogy” guy out there.
    B) Gill from RealWeegie is doing something with her “Darlin’ Husband,” and my wife gave me an interesting idea.
    C) That means I’d like to sign up for not Jaws…but Jaws 2.

  2. Is it fine if I steal Hamlette’s idea and do a top ten list of his scores? I’m pretty sure they will be different lists as she has seen hundreds more films than I have, haha! I would love to write a review, but I don’t think I can do that with school. On the other hand, I can totally just listen to a bunch of scores while doing homework and rank which are my favorites…
Let me know if this is a problem! Thanks! Love the idea for this blogathon (sorry I haven’t been participating in many lately!).

  3. I know this is last minute, but can I pop in to sign up? Is it fine if I steal Hamlette’s idea and do a top ten list of his scores? On the other hand, I can totally just listen to a bunch of scores while doing homework and rank which are my favorites… I might make it focused on Star Wars, or I might want to branch out into his other work. I don’t know yet.
