We have come to the end, friends, after a weekend of impressive posts and worthy tributes to the Titanic and her passengers, as well as to the many cultural depictions of the disaster. I’m enjoying working through your posts and looking forward to reading the rest of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this such a great event!
And as usual, if anyone has any last-but-never-least posts, please feel free to send them to me and I’ll post them here.
So why are we still fascinated by the Titanic over a century after the sinking? It never fails to inspire disbelief as well as shock and regret for the great loss of life. We wish things had been different. We see it as a point in history when nothing was the same again. It was a loss of innocence.
However, it’s also a great love for the ship itself, which was, in essence, a floating work of art. Survivor Eva Hart once summed up why Titanic is special. “She was a beautiful ship. She looked so lovely. That’s how we ought to remember her.”
Thanks again, everyone. Hope to see you tomorrow, because I have a special announcement…
Fun blogathon. In case you are interested my next one is up and posted.
