Announcing the Titanic In Pop Culture Blogathon!

Over a century after it sank, the Titanic remains a pop-culture phenomenon, and not just as far as movies are concerned. There have been books, documentaries, video games, TV miniseries, shorts, parodies, passing references (who hasn’t heard the expression, “It’s like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic“?). Goodness knows some of these iterations have been more successful than others, but they seldom fail to keep the doomed liner in the public consciousness.

Goodness knows the Titanic has been a topic of conversation on Taking Up Room before, but as it often happens, my lovely friend, Gill of Realweegiemidget Reviews, gave me an idea. In this case, she remarked that she was surprised I hadn’t yet done a blogathon about Titanic movies.

Hmmm. Not a bad idea, Gill. Not a bad idea at all.

In fact, I thought it would be nice to open it up to Titanic‘s entire pop culture gamut. Or anything to do with Titanic, for that matter. This is, obviously, not meant to disrespect the passengers and crew of that famed ship, but just a look at how pervasive the Titanic continues to be in our culture at large.

So yeah, here we go with…

The Rules

  1. If anyone would like to join, please leave a comment here or contact me via my Contact page, or via Threads, Instagram, X/Twitter (all @takinguproom), or e-mail (rebeccadeniston@gmail.com).
  2. The blogathon will take place from Friday, the eighteenth of July until the twentieth. Posts can be sent to me on or around those days by any of the avenues listed in Item One.
  3. New material only, please.
  4. Topics can include reviews of movies, TV productions, the Titanic musical, and various pop culture depictions (find a list here).
  5. Nothing derogatory, please. If you choose to write about the various Titanic parodies that are out there, excluding Asylum movies (which we all know are just dumb), please be as respectful as possible.
  6. Since this is such a big topic, and accessibility may be a thing, duplicates are allowed for movies, TV productions, and documentaries. No duplicates will be allowed for other topics.
  7. Grab a banner and advertise the blogathon!

  1. Hi Rebecca! I’d like to join with a look at two TV episodes, “Night of April 14th,” One Step Beyond (1959) and “Lone Survivor,” Night Gallery (1971).

      1. Thanks. I thought about writing about the obvious choice, 1997’s Titanic, which I saw in 1997 on opening night in the 8th grade, and then saw 3 times total in the theater. However, since I usually rewatch what I’m writing about, I didn’t know that I wanted to commit to a film that’s so long!

  2. Could I do Titanic (1953) with Barbara Stanwyck?

I had no idea there were so many movies about the Titanic until I started reading your blogathon announcement. Looks like lots of new titles to add to my never-ending To Watch list…

  3. I wasn’t going to enter this one because I couldn’t think of any movies that I could easily access, and the only thing I could thing of was a novel I read once, Sherlock Holmes and the Titanic Tragedy. Unfortunately the copy I had must’ve been one of the ones I culled from my collection when I was planning my move.

But then I remembered that the TV series “In Search Of” covered the event in one of it’s episodes. And since I have that entire series (there was NO way I was going to cull THAT collection), I think I can enter this blogathon.

  4. Exciting! I have many fond memories of watching the two-set VHS set of the James Cameron film growing up.

I’d like to sign up to talk about the first Titanic movie 1912’s Saved from the Titanic starring a Titanic survivor and actress Dorothy Gibson.
