Hi, everyone! I’ve got a quick bit of business for you. Some of you may have noticed that something’s different about the blog in the past few days. A certain word in the domain name is strangely…missing. WordPress users will already know what this means.
For everyone else, here’s the lowdown: I’ve upgraded Taking Up Room to the Pro plan!
Initially I wasn’t crazy about the idea of going to a paid plan because then the blog’s existence hinges on paying the hosting fee, and if I don’t do that, years of work slide down the tubes. That sucks. On the other hand, WordPress kind of forced things when they decided to go from four paid plans to basically two, which a lot of people in the user community weren’t happy about. The TL;DR of the story according to WordPress is: “Go low or go Pro.”
Seriously, though, it’s time. As of December it’ll be seven years since I started blogging (what?) and I’ve been feeling for a long time that the site needs a redesign, so upgrading is one of the ways this is going to happen. I’m not sure what shape the upgrade is going to take yet, but there will be new features popping up here and there. The site will probably get a new look because its original book blog form doesn’t really apply anymore, so the bookshelf image doesn’t make as much sense as it used to.
Don’t expect much right away because I want to put some thought into this (not to mention I’ve heard horror stories about blogs crashing after a theme change), but things will happen. Whatever it is, it should be fun and I hope you all enjoy it. And if you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see on the blog, please let me know!
All right, another Shamedown is coming up on Sunday, and here are a couple of dangling carrots: Mail planes and death rays. Sound intriguing? Yep. See you Sunday…
P.S. I can’t resist…
If you’re enjoying what you see on Taking Up Room, please look for additional content on Substack, where you’ll find both free and subscriber-only articles. I publish every Wednesday and Saturday.
Good luck and well done for taking the plunge. Do give us updates on how it’s going and will have to DM more on this, so many questions!

Thanks, Gill, and yeah, I’ll have to do that! I have no idea what I’m doing, but so far so good. 🙂

I really admire you for trying all these new ventures out, you should start another blog sharing those experiences. You are always an honest and passionate writer so I am sure that would be a hit.

Thanks, Gill–I appreciate that. Who knows, I’ll have to think about it. 🙂

Looks good! Definitely worth it, I’d say. I went to a paid plan a couple years ago, and I think it was worth it just to get rid of the ugly ads that used to pop up on the free version.

Thanks, Paul! Yeah, I can’t stand those ads, either.
